Curcumin, an active anti-inflammatory compound found in the spice turmeric, has been shown to help fight many forms of cancer. New conclusions published in the journal Cancer Research state that the natural phenols in turmeric can interrupt the growth of prostate cancer tumors by blocking receptors used to spread the growth of cellular tissues. 

Additional research published in the journal PLoS One explains the precise way in which turmeric molecules act by targeting amyloid fibers associated with the abnormal protein growth and plaque formation characteristic of Alzheimer’s patients. Adding turmeric to a healthy diet or taking a supplement containing the recommended daily amount of turmeric in a capsule can protect you from potential multiplication of cancer cells and from Alzheimer's dementia. Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer with over 250,000 cases recorded annually only in the United States. Any natural ingredient that targets limiting prostate cancer cells can offer a significant treatment compared to other allopathic methods, such as radiation, surgery, or chemotherapy. For the study, researchers deprived cancer cells of hormones in the presence, but also absence of turmeric at normal doses. The researchers discovered that turmeric blocked two genetic receptors essential for the spread of prostate cancer. These receptors had been revealed in previous studies to predict the degree and rate of growth of existing tumors. It was noted that turmeric was “a powerful inhibitor of the cell cycle and survival in prostate cancer cells.” The lead researcher and author, Dr. Karen Knudsen, and her research team found that other cancer cell lines multiply using the same receptor mechanism, evolution of which might be disrupted by turmeric. She commented that turmeric, “has effects beyond prostate cancer ... in other malignancies such as breast cancer. Regarding tumors, turmeric can have a fairly promising therapeutic role.” In a different study, scientists found that turmeric extends life and enhances the activity of brain neurons acting as a neuroprotective shield against the progression of Alzheimer’s. 

The research team concluded that turmeric acted inhibitory on the harmful accumulation of amyloid fibers around neuron synapses. Amyloid fibers are known to block the smooth electrical and chemical transmissions in the brain that are necessary for memory formation and knowledge retention. It is known that you should limit or better remove sugars, white flour, sweets, conventional pasta from your diet because their intake floods the body with glucose, aggravates insulin, causing high concentrations of amyloid fibers and free radicals in the brain. Additional carbohydrates and fatty acids are part of the free radicals that act as molecular cleaners attacking cell membranes and causing premature aging in organs such as the skin, heart, and liver.
