Some proponents of astragalus use it for its potential heart benefits. They claim it may protect against heart diseases.

It is also used to improve overall weakness. Its advocates also say it stimulates the spleen, liver, lungs, circulatory and urinary system. It is also used for the treatment of arthritis, asthma, and nerve conditions, as well as for reducing blood sugar and blood pressure.

Pregnant or nursing women should not use astragalus root. If you have an autoimmune disorder such as multiple sclerosis, lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus), rheumatoid arthritis, or another condition known as 'autoimmune disease,' you should not use astragalus root.

You should take astragalus with a full glass of water. It is recommended to drink extra fluids with this herb, as it may cause blockages in the esophagus or intestines. Do not take the root for more than seven consecutive days unless instructed by your doctor.
