Acorus or Calamus is an herb that is considered to be very helpful for uric acid and also for quitting smoking as it causes a bad taste when consumed and then smoked.
In modern herbal therapy, Calamus is mainly used for the treatment of stomach disorders. Its intake stimulates the salivary glands and the production of stomach fluids, thus addressing a range of problems such as indigestion, gastritis, bloating, heartburn, 'aerophagia,' and 'sour burps'. It is believed to fight intestinal parasites and have diuretic properties.
In Ayurveda, it is a particularly important herb recommended for dealing with the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption - it is believed to assist in the proper functioning of the liver.
